Spring Term 2018
Yukon Year 3

Welcome back! It is the start of an exciting 2018 at Wheeler and after a successful first term, I am sure we are going to have another superb term together!

As a way to extend the children’s learning in class, I will be setting termly homework, which will be stuck into the children’s books. It may be to complete some maths work, write a poem or create something exciting to share with the class. Should you need to chat to myself about anything regarding these areas of learning, please feel free to pop in before or after school when I will be more than happy to see you.

Children also need to continue practise reading at home, so we appreciate your help, listening to your child read and encouraging them to discuss the book they are reading. Please make sure your child brings their book bag to school every week to allow us to change their book on a Friday. They will also have the opportunity to select a library book to bring home each week. We will also be sending spellings home to practise each week, ready for a test on Friday. You will be able to check your child’s test score in the back of their spelling book.

Mr. Davey

PE Kits
Children continue to be taught PE at least twice a week and should have their kits in school every day, so we can take advantage of any good weather and take the children outside, when possible. Both indoor and outdoor kits will be needed this term. Please remember to make sure that if your child is wearing earrings they have included micropore tape or plasters as part of their P.E. kit or that they can remove their ear-rings independently.

The Core Subjects
Literacy – We will be starting this term by looking at Flotsam and writing our own narratives. We will then move on to writing biographies based on famous inventors.
Maths – In Yukon we will begin the new term looking at multiplication and division. Learning the multiplication tables continues to be a vitally important part of your child’s development in maths. We will be learning our 4 times tables this term. If you want to practise at home, your child can log into Active Learn or visit Sumdog.
Science –We will be learning about lots of different areas of science, such as light and dark.
Computing  –The children will be using Computing throughout the curriculum, as well as receiving specific skills based lessons as required.
R.E. –Mrs Waddley will continue to explore  rich and diverse opportunities to broaden their knowledge surrounding R.E.
History and Geography Topic: Inventors and inventions.  In the spring term we are going to be looking at a range of inventors and inventions.  We will be learning about how our world has changed over time and explore some of the fascinating inventions. This topic will include our D&T and Art lessons, and in addition, we will be tying it into our literacy work and reading some biographies.
What you can do at home:
• Use the Internet to gather facts about inventions.
• Go and visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park or Eureka Museum.

We will also be doing philosophy as a class and discussing some important issues to help the children develop their abilities to debate and explain.

If you have any questions about what we will be studying this term, or would like any further information, please come and see me before or after school.

I look forward to another fantastic term,

Mr. Davey
